This 'lights behind the grille' 1949 Land Rover is a real survivor.
It turned up derelict in a Croydon yard and was restored as a lengthy Land Rover World magazine restoration project series.
Before me it had only two owners; Croydon Borough Council and then a Croydon garage that used it as a tow truck.
It needed a lot of work but is surprisingly original. It had the chassis repaired and repainted, the axles overhauled, the engine rebuilt, the bulkhead replaced with an original of the right age (the bulkhead was the only thing we couldn't repair), the bodywork was tidied up and the seats re-upholstered.
It has a new fuel tank, the original radiator grille, hoodsticks, steering wheel and horn push. The whole thing was then repainted in bronze green and then rewired and taken for an MoT.
It was originally registered HBY but there was no paperwork to prove entitlement to that number plate so it is now registered on an age-related number.
It has 12months MoT. It is not concours but a tidy 1949 Land Rover restored sympathetically to be a usable and presentable classic. It has hardly been used since completion (because I have other Series Ones) but was shown at the 2008 Land Rover World show at Eastnor and the LRSOC 60th anniversary event at Chepstow in 2008 and stored under cover since.
